Farm to Pantry Exclusive Neighborhood Vinegar
In 1901, Great Grandfather Ponzo left Valle d'Aosta, Italy for Healdsburg with his wife, six children and a treasured possession: the "mother" starter, used to make red wine vinegar from leftover red wine. This living culture had been nurtured for generations in their Italian kitchen, transforming every drop of wine into something precious.
They purchased a ranch on Dry Creek Road, where the oldest son, Phillip (Kathleen Ponzo's grandfather), worked alongside his father to build Philip Ponzo & Son Winery. The winery flourished, its wines reflecting the family's old-world knowledge and new-world ambition. Then came Prohibition, and the winery doors closed. The "mother," however, endured. For over 120 years, it was carefully fed and maintained, passed down through generations. It remains a living link to Valle d'Aosta and to the family's winemaking heritage.
In the fall of 2025, the Ponzo family made a remarkable decision, they donated the "mother" to the Farm to Pantry Team, and Neighborhood Vinegar was born. Now, this historic starter continues its work, creating small-batch artisan vinegar that contains more than a century of family tradition in every bottle. All proceeds from Neighborhood Vinegar support our mission, turning a treasured family heirloom into a gift that keeps on giving to our community.
Crafted from Zinfandel, this "Zinegar" dances on your tongue with bold dark berry flavors, balanced with firm acidity. A lovely accompaniment to fresh spring greens!
